No New Posts Mount. Kosciusko

Mt. Kossy is the highest point in Australia, dashed with snow in the warmer months and completely covered in winter. It looms over the High Country, tall, sloping and majestic. Its treeless rock-studded inclines are slight enough to climb, and the view from the top is phenomenal.

The northern-most peak of the Ramsheads, it leads on from the range up to Lake Cootapatamba. The granite tors are steep here, and should be navigated with caution.

These three peaks make up the Ramshead Range, and provide brumbies with alpine slopes and paths on which to evade any would-be captors. Legend speaks of Thowra here who was born on the Southern-most peak.

No New Posts Murray River

Impassable but for the bravest brumbies, the Murray River twists southward along the western border of the High Country. Its tributaries include Dead Horse Creek, Cascade Creek, and Tin Mine Creek! The river is wide and deep, and is a raging torrent during spring, but the path it cuts is the easiest to follow when traveling.

No New Posts Dead Horse Ridge

The Ridge is a rise of land to the South of Dead Horse Hut that follows the line of the Cascade Creek, passing Yarraman's Valley and eventually reaching the Brolga's Country. Its northern point is a good vantage point for observing the men but quite open.

Ideal for cattle grazing, this wide open area between the ridge and the man's hut is often frequented by man during the warm months. In winter, however, brumby herds have been known to graze here.

No New Posts Crackenback River

Fed by Dead Horse Creek and other streams from the Ramshead, the Crackenback heads East through the deeper country. Its valley is the main travel route to reach the Bogong. It is one of the largest and fiercest rivers, and should be crossed nearer to Dead Horse Gap than further downstream.

No New Posts The Secret Valley

Hidden away to the east of the Bogong is a Valley thats almost impossible to find and gain entry to. This is where the legendary Thowra once hid his herd, but it's position has been forgotten over time. Now, a white mare called Loorea has found it, and only she and those she tells can find this valley.

To the South West of the Bogong is the Brindle Bull, tors of rock with ample grazing for one or two herds. Brumbies that know the area well can use the rocky trails to lose man or other brumbies without a trace.

No New Posts The Big Boggy

The Boggy surrounds the largest tributary of the Crackenback to the South of the Brindle Bull and is smothered in tussocky grass and reeds. The swamp can prove fatal to horses in particular in the wetter months, but it can also be a useful tool to those that know how to exploit its advantages.

Perhaps the most dreaded place in the High Country. There are little to no signs of brumbies living in this area, as it is rumoured to be the home of the infamous Nightrunners. The ground is swampy, the river is surrounded on both banks with a dense forest of old and gnarled mountain ash and tea tree. Not a place you want to be caught at night!
