Cean tossed her head with another neighing laugh, the musical ringing tones did not cease through the entirety of his triad. “Oh yes, it looks rather uncomfortable, but I tend to avoid what’s uncomfortable.”
Cean would sputter within the next heartbeat, his rearing bucking drawing forth more laughter from the mare, but it was the snow kicked into her face that had her violently shaking the cold wet flakes from her eyes. A moment later she would have given chase if he had not halted so swiftly. With a regal trot the live chestnut equine pranced up beside the young stallion. “Use your lashes to shield your vision if you must run into the sun, a good trick once it's perfected, to lose an enemy.”
A single forelimb lifted striking at the cold frozen ground. “Stay off the ice, run where snow is level, and undisturbed. You can find purchase on the new snow, though your balance has to be good least you go sprawling and break a leg. Where the snow builds into hills, have a care, those are deeper areas. And if running could cause serious damage.” Head lowered whiffing at the fluffy snow as she continued to speak. “Often, but not always you can judge what type of terrain the snow is hiding but how it lands once the winds have blown through.”

Omeo listened intently, impressed by her knowledge. He nodded, trying to absorb every detail. Cean was a variable well of facts and hints. He wondered what other remarkable things she knew about. Tackling the snow suddenly seemed much easier, and he trotted a test circle. “Thank you, Cean.” He said earnestly, “You’ve taught me a lot already!”
The colt whinnied, and pawed at the shallow snow. It kicked up in dusty sprays, and he cavorted about for a moment, careful to remember what Cean had told him about drifts and ice. He loped back, and in their first touch, head butted her shoulder playfully. “How did you come to be so wise?” He asked, smiling over at her as he kicked more snow from the grass. He lowered his head and picked up what blades he could, noting they were crisp from being frozen.
The sun felt warm upon his back, and he wondered how soon it would be before this first brave snowfall would thaw. The sky was clear, so it seemed there was no more on the way. Other brumbies were stirring, herds making their way out onto the Bogong to begin the day’s grazing. His ears flickered as the sounds sounded sharper across the snow, and he jerked his head up when a stallion’s call sounded closer than it was. He grinned sheepishly to Cean, and wondered how soon one of those stallions would notice the lone mare.

Omeo nodded his head toward the indistinct shapes in the distance. “Oh, it’s the stallions; they keep chasing me. Apparently they don’t like me trying to be friends with their daughters.” He flashed a somewhat roguish smile, and ruffled his mane with a shake of his head. “They’ll see us soon, won’t they?” He asked his dark russet companion. “The stallions I mean, not the daughters.” He grinned, as if he wouldn’t mind being noticed by the daughters.
“Do you think any of them are worthy enough to be your stallion?” He asked, no unsubtle hint to it, just a simple curiosity. Perhaps when he was another year older, he would be worthy enough for her. Or at least, he hoped he would be. To be worthy of any mare was an achievement, but for a wise mare like Cean, he would have to build on what she had already told him to become the great stallion that he wanted to be.
He had stopped nibbling at the grass, and was looking out across the plains. So life had taught Cean her lessons. Omeo was going to pay very good attention to life, and see what he could learn from it. It startled him to realise that Cean had taught him more in a matter of minutes than he had learn in two years. She was quite remarkable, and he gave her a friendly nudge on the shoulder to show he appreciated her company.

Cean gave another of her joyous silky laughs, "I wonder why with a smile like that!" She would teased her companion, twins flickering back with mock dismay before lightening into a smile once more. With his next question came the equivalent of an equine shrug. "Most likely, such it the downfall of this plateau, there is not much in the way of cover."
He was full of questions, rapidly fired, it brought that slender arched neck about to headbutt his shoulder, before retreating to look across the waking beasts. "I wouldn't know." Indeed she wouldn't. Not a solitary mare by nature, she would frequently join with a small band of mares whose stallion would be off on some adventure, only to disappear before he himself reappeared to lay claim to her. Such had been her habit this last season or two that she'd been on her own.
Still she would eventually face the trials of finding a stallion, but at the moment such details were the last thing on her mind. Gaze followed Omeo's example, drifting across the winter blanketed plains. Sides would heave in a contented sigh, much like the one that had escaped moments before he had found her. Playfully she would nip at his mane when his head nudged at her shoulder.

Omeo nodded his head sagely in agreement. The stirring herds herd his attention, and he knew he would have to leave soon. “I will have to return in the Spring when there is no snow, and the stallions are too interested in their mares than to watch over their daughters.” He flashed another of those roguish smiled, and tossed his head into the air. The sun was casting that bright light, and he shaded his brown eyes with pale lashes.
“I think it is time for me to go, my friend. I hope you find your stallion, or I shall see you again before you do.” He touched his nose to her in a lingering farewell. “I shall not forget your wisdom, you have helped me greatly. It shall be with your help that you’ll hear of me in a few years time. I will be that handsome brave stallion that every mare talks about, who no filly can resist.” He winked, and shifted his weight as he made ready to go.
“Good day, Cean, take care of yourself.” The roaned colt nickered and set off at a fast pace down the hill, careful not to slip and using the tips Cean had shared with him. He did feel much more sure-footed now, and he paused to rear a final farewell to his liver chestnut friend. One day he would do her proud. Until then, he could not get in her way of finding that perfect stallion.

"Indeed you will should, the view is simply spectacular, fillies aside." Snickered the mare, a wink offered to the young stallion. A moment or two of quiet before his announcement that it was time for him to bide farewell. It sadden her somewhat, but she was certian she'd see him running the lands. Muzzle to muzzle, breath intermingling for that moment.
"I will keep my ears open, for I am certain you name will be whispered quite soon." Chuckling lightly. "Fare thee well, Omeo, until next time." Watching as he twisted away, his surefootedness (is that a word? XD) grew with every step he took. Muscles tense, torso thrown into the air, timbers pawing at the winds, a wickering farewell vibrated free from silky pipes. Ebony hooves returned to the earth, watching tell he was nothing more then a speck to her sight.
With a slight sobering of her demeanor Cean peered off over the platuea, radars twitch, her shadow lengthened. It was time to go she supposed. The chill of the wind nipped through the lengthy dark fire coat. Pristine legs fade into the icy snow. The sky shone clear, unmarred by the flutter of clouds, though an occasional dot circling above, cast shadows to the ground sending tiny critters scattering.
