His rudeness just made Ekala angrier, and her ears remained flicked backward with menace. She returned the daggers, her liquid chocolate eyes focused on his, trying out a death stare - attempting to show her dominance to this rude colt. As he replied to her, his tone grumpy but perhaps defeated, Ekala raised her head high, ears half raised.
"Is that so, young one?" She had the tone of a dissaproving parent, although perhaps a rather more stern and angry one than usual. She continued, her eyes still focused on his so as better to get the message across that she would not be bullied by him "Its my business when you're bullying a defenceless filly." Ekala was matter of fact, lips pressed together tightly to refrain from using some of the more expressive words in her vocabulary.
This colt was just a bully, she saw - and would remedy that by giving a bully what he needed, discipline. She could feel the quivering of the pale roan filly behind her, and it made her all the more angry. She broke her gaze with the colt briefly, so that she could turn to nuzzle the filly, snuffing her skinny body all over to check that she was not hurt. Despite being very cold and frightened, she seemed fine. Ekala turned her gaze back to the colt.
"You ought to learn some manners. And pick on somebody you're own size, to think that you would hurt a filly half your size! You must be compensating for something" there it was, her sharp nature coming out to whip this young fellow into shape. She glared at him for a few more moments before turning to snuff at the filly again protectively.

It did not escape Lark’s notice that the podgy blue mare was angry, but it did not affect him as such. He simply did not care. He was an independent horse now and did not have to worry about the moods of miscellaneous mares.
He’d had quite enough of disapproving parents in his life, so her tone did not sit at all well with him. His eyes narrowed, and his mood drifted from annoyed and irritated to properly angry at last. This was not an interruption he needed nor wanted in his life. Who did this mare think she was anyway? Clearly she was not the filly’s mother.
“Your old eyes deceive you,” he replied snidely, even though she could not be as old as hi father by any means, “I was simply trying to strike up a conversation.”
He lifted his nose high - feelings of righteousness cursing through him. She had no right to be saying these things to him! He was an independent entity - an aspiring stallion. It was not for mares to be speaking out against him!
“It was out of good manners that I even approached her, she was just standing there. You can have her if you want - I don’t. There’s something wrong with her. She won’t speak even if you ask nicely.”
With this, Lark trotted off, still on his high horse, having grown bored and annoyed. There was no point hanging around listening to insults all day. The mare could get frustrated with the filly without him there. He trotted off with light steps into the snowstorm, tossing his head and snorting disparagingly on the way out.

Her staring blue eyes seemed to be looking through the mare, as if she could still see the colt. Until the mare turned the snuffle her the first time. Eumina’s gaze flickered, wide nervous eyes peering up at the mare as she sniffed her all over. Unfortunately the mare’s movements stopped obscuring the colt from view, and her stare turned frightened again as it locked back to the male.
The over-splashed red dun looked entirely out of place in the snow scene with the two dark clouds of horses. She was like some completely different species, thin and willowy, and with legs and face marked so heavily with white that she just seemed to be a disembodied torso floating in the air. She seemed too dainty for the High Country, a place known for its trials and hardships. She had obviously not coped well so far.
The conversation floated over her head like background noise. She could understand the words, but it was almost as if she did not want to hear them. So she listened to the sound of them rather than the words and their meanings. The colt was so angry, she flinched at every harsh sound he made. The mare was strong and sure though, and the filly wanted to snuggle up against her flank and listen to those words from where they started.
With the colt still present though, Eumina could not move. As if the mare were some saviour, though, she could feel the colt moving away. Even if she could not see him, she knew he was going from the sound of his feet on snow and the departing fury that followed him. The mare had turned to nuzzle her again, and Eumina’s eyes finally looked to meet hers. They were wide and frightened, but it seemed the further away the colt, the calmer she became.
Eventually she could move, and the first thing she did was reach out her delicate pink nose and rest it on the darkness of the mare’s. This was not her mother, but she reminded her of her mother’s friend Luz who had always travelled with them. She trusted Luz, and she found all of that trust in her heart and gave it to this mare. She was saved from the colt, and she thanked the mare with all of her heart.

Ekala met the colts cool gaze full on, her own eyes not hiding any of her anger. She would have liked to give this colt a good beating, if it had been her place. Of course, she still could have - but he was a rather strong looking beast, even in his young age, and Ekala would have prefered not to frighten the filly even more. As well as the possibility that she could be hurt, having an open wound or lame leg in winter could be disastrous.
With the last of his snide comments, the beast trotted away - none of Ekala's words having taken any effect on his ego. Ekala watched him go, snorting in slight amusement. Turning back to the filly, her eyes locked, and with a throb of motherly love, Ekala smiled. The softest of touches came then, the fillies pretty pink nose touching Ekala's own dark one.
Her eyes softened, "Come now little one, I shall watch over you until we can find your mother." Her smile faded as her head lifted, eyeing the terrain. It would be hard going for a half frozen filly, with scarce food to fuel her energies. The blue roan mares handsome head dropped once more to snuff the filly, and nudge her gently. "Can you follow me?" She asked quietly, ears flicked forward hopefully. She had all mother-canons blasting now.

Eumina could feel the tightness in her chest easing not the colt was gone, and she took some deep breaths to fill her lungs with chilled calming air. She picked up each of her legs, easing the staffness from them. She had stood so still for so long. Her shaking was diminished, and when she looked again to the mare, she look less like a surprised possum and more like the pretty young filly that she was.
The mare was taking it upon herself to watch over her, and Eumina thanked her with another quick touch of her muzzle to hers. The mare seemed to be evaluating the terrain, and so Eumina shook out her coat, feeling ready now to move. She nodded quickly at the mare’s question, and took a few hesitant steps forward. The snow was awfully cold and confusing, and she looked around hopelessly. She had no idea where she was, but she would happily follow this mare in any direction she chose to take her.
Her pale hooves listed from the snow, and she danced to the side, bumping into the mare. Feeling the warm flank against hers, she stuck to the mare and rested her nose on her saviour’s flank. She was ready to leave this hateful place.
