The chestnut lost his grip on Nepelle’s withers, yanking skin and mane as he did. Nepelle called out in pain, but wheeled around to face him again. He saw the more mature stallion stumble a little, and went charging at him throwing his body weight behind him in the hope that he would knock the other even further off balance.
Instead he received a drumming kick to the front of his chest; not his legs as he suspected it was intended, as he could not pull up in time to avoid it. Rearing slightly, Nepelle took a grab at the chestnut’s withers in an attempt to try and beat the other sufficiently so that he would back down. The contest was too easily matched, and the only way he thought he might win was either by forfeit from his opponent or by sheer bad luck for the other chestnut.

His kick hit again, but the other stallion was quick with his teeth and he felt the other get a grip on his shoulder as their chests collided. Nandalie snorted, snapping his teeth to try and dislodge him. The other had too good a grip, though, and his footing was too weak to make a good go of shoving his opponent.
As much as it rankled, he could not keep this up forever, and he used the shrill cry of one of the chestnut’s mares as a distraction to pull away. He gave a token kick of his heels before retreating a little distance. The roan obviously had some strength left as he eyed the chestnut, but he grudgingly retreated up the valley, keeping a wary eye on the victor.
It was out of respect that he forfeited. The chestnut was obviously a strong contender, and while on a better day Nandalie might push himself harder, he could not in this treacherous weather. The chestnut had proven his strength, and Nandalie could reluctantly admire that.

His teeth closed down hard on the other’s withers, and Nepelle held on with all his might. He maintined his position though the other made attempts to dislodge him, and were his jaw not clamped down so strongly he might have snorted in triumph. His mouth was acheing from the effort , but still he held on until the call of one of his beloved mares distracted him. They must have followed him up the valley!
Letting go of his opponent, Nepelle threw a quick and desperate glance backwards. He had not wanted the other stallion to be further tempted to beat him into the ground for his mares – as they were indeed all lovely.
Turning back to the chestnut, Nepelle was blowing hard and short of breath, but his fighting spirit was still strong. He was tired now, and blood dripped from the cuts he had received. Fearing that his wounds might stiffen along with his legs which had received a battering, he trotted in place slightly, eyeing the other stallion warily, fully prepared to fight on despite rising exhaustion.
He snorted quietly in relief as the big chestnut retreated back up the valley to his own mares. Nepelle nodded at his retreating form out of respect. Although he had technically triumphed in this battle over the food and fresh water down the valley, both stallions would have been ready for more were the weather better, and then who knew what the outcome might have been.
