Lentara stood moving her weight from one rear leg to the other at the mention of a secret. Secrets were so exciting! She leaned her head towards Omeo as he too shifted closer, her eyes bright with curiosity. It did not take much to excite Lentara, but this was a whole new level of fun!
She gave him a queer look when Omeo told her what it was. It was strange – both brumbies wanted what the other had. She smiled happily though – she had not considered herself the lucky one in this scenario.
“I guess everyone wants what they don’t have, even if what they really want is right in front of their muzzles,” she said in a brief and rare moment of wisdom.
The mood of seriousness was broken when Omeo snorted and shoved her shoulder playfully before racing away through the snow, making showers of white crystals fly every which way. Lentara’s eyes regained their perpetual excited and playful expression as she replied joyfully to his neigh with a high pitched one of her own.
She raced after him, crashing and leaping and dancing through the great drifts of snow after him. This was much more like it! Although Lentara loved to talk almost as much as playing, there were few conversations that could beat a good game.

The two played for going on two hours. The spotted yearling had boundless energy, and by the end of their games, Omeo was blowing. He fixed his tired smile on Lentara, and signified the end of the games with a shae of his head. “Any more and I will lay down and sleep right here.” He cast a glance to the sky and snorted. “I must be going, my spotty friend.” Said the colt, and he trotted through the churned up snow to stand beside the shorter brumby.
“Thank you for playing with me, and sharing your stories even if you cannot share your spots.” He chuckled, and nosed her snow white neck. “May I call on you again when the snow is gone? I’d have better hope of finding you then.” It was really uncanny how she managed to blend with the snow. Many times in their play had he looked away, only to look back and think her gone.
Lentara was too young for him to think of her as a filly to be gathered, but he enjoyed her innocence and fun-loving nature. He considered her a friend, and perhaps one day when she was old enough, she would want to join him in his adventures that she so envied.
