There was no fear. She thought this trust she was putting in him could break at any time, but it held strong, and that dam holding back her fear strengthened at every opportunity that he could have hurt her and he didn’t. Afterward, when he came around to her front again, she could look at him without worry creeping into her mind. Her legs didn’t lock up when she helped close the distance, her pale nose resting once again against his.
The pale red filly huffed gently, blue eyed half-lidded. She gently rubbed her poll under his chin as he whispered to her, closing her eyes as she tucked her head sleepily under his neck. Her instinct sated, she was left with just that warm comfort the stallion provided. Impossible as it seemed, he made her feel safe. He was a big brute of a stallion; she has seen his display of strength when he fought the steely grey. But she had also seen his kindness.
It could be a dream, she supposed. How else could she believe that a stallion could be kind? Gentle? Loving? It had to be a dream, a wonderful dream, but a dream nonetheless. It was a pleasant difference from the nightmares that usually plagued her, and she pushed close the big bay roan as if to cling onto the dream. If it were up to her, she would be his Rose forever, but the dream could end at any time.

The gentle warmth of the mare against his chest answered his question. She was just fine and she wasn't afraid. Pallarang felt his whole body relax and he gently curled his neck around her, rubbing his chin against her soft cheek. It didn't matter that she was a small skittish mare who would probably never talk. To other stallions, she wasn't worth much. But she meant much more to him. She was dynamic and beautiful, sweet and dainty. Rose was something that he could protect and that needed protection.
The rustle of a bush and the brightening sky made him shift his head upwards. It was then he realized the night was over, but that didn't mean the dream had to be. He gently nuzzled the dun mare between the ears and looked her in the eye. "We should stay here for a few days. At least until I get my strength back so I can keep you safe," he said softly. Pallarang knew that with a mare in heat, a stallion had to be in his top condition, and the roan was far from that. And now, he couldn't even bare to think of her being frightened by another stallion.
After the sky began to turn blue and the sun squeaked over the rocks, he nudged Rose's shoulder lovingly and walked slowly over to Ekala. He rubbed his muzzle against he barrel and stepped back. "We're staying here for a few days. I can't protect Rose from everyone in this condition," he said and looked up at the sun. "There's plenty of grazing here for the three of us, and the rocks will keep our scent here." He really meant Rose's scent. He hoped that he was right.
