Kaie stood at ease on a slope of the Bridle Bull, his two fillies, Sia and Tallerk, ahead of him. Dipping his head to graze, he took a quick glace around to make sure that there was no other living creature other than he and his mares on the strech of land where they stood. Satisfied, he chewed on a juicy cud of grass, scanning the area with light brown eyes.

Sia watched Kaie for a moment. Her dark brown eyes scanning over his very fine build, he must have still been sore from the battle; even though the cremello didn't really get much of a hit in for Kaie to be very sore. Sighing softly, she looked over at the seal bay mare, Tallerk, and suddenly felt sorry, remembering the state she had been in when she saw that her stallion had lost.
Slowly and steadily she slipped closer to Tallerk, feeling as though she was the reason for the mares hurt. Not saying anything, Sia lowered her dante head to the grass and began to crop the emerald blades back, while also keeping an eye on the mare.

The day was young. A fresh autumn breeze swept over the sunlit lands. The landscape consisted mostly of great ridges of rock, which was interspersed with blankets of wild grass. It was upon this grass that Tallerk stood, her head drooping, legs sagging, the epitome of misery. While the others grazed, she still stood unmoving, her eyes glazed and forlorn.
Why eat? It only allowed her to live, and why live when her mate was dead?
It had been a few days since that horrible moment when Jirrand fell. Tallerk had long since given up; given up fighting, and given up hope. The sun rose and went down again, the birds chirped and the crickets creaked, the wind blowed and life went on, but Tallerk didn't notice. She didn't feel the grass tickling her legs, nor the gentle gust that tossed her mane. It was as if she was looking through someone else's eyes, as if she wasn't even here. As for the other two brumbies, well, Tallerk despised them. She hated that big bay, she hated his guts, hated the way he glanced around so calmly, without a care in the world.
Murderer! Thief!
And the chestnut mare? Tallerk hated her as well, though perhaps not with the same passion as she did the bay. It didn't really matter, anyway. Nothing really mattered anymore. Tallerk caught some motion from the corner of her eye, but didn't care to look. Maybe it was a dingo, coming to finish her off, to finally end the battle. Vaguely, Tallerk realized she was delirious, but the realization only aroused a crude humor, and she snorted in an amused, far-away fashion.

Kaie shook hs head sadly. He hated to see any horse as miserable as Tallerk was. He hadn't really wanted to part her from her mate, but what if he had been dead? He didn't want her to die as well; he wasn't that cruel, and he hadn't meant to kill the strange-looking stallion. He knew she probably hated him. He would, in her place. He let out a sigh. If only the other stallion were alive. If only. . .

A snort emitted from the bay mare made Sia look up at her. She watched as the mare distanced herself from the world. It must have been a terrible thing to have lost a lover, and she wondered how long they had been together? Sia was not very pleased with Kaie at the moment, she felt sour for him; but she knew it would pass as time went on. Sighing wearily, she felt a lot older than the three years she was and the mares depression was adding years to it. Tired and now in a bad mood, Sia moved silently away; head lowered as she searched the ground for a better patch of moist grass.

Kaie caught the slightly angry and world-weary glance she threw at him, and watched as she turned away. He shook his head vigourously. No, no, NO! He hadn't wanted this. All he had wanted was to protect Sia. Why this cruel turn of fate? He pawed the ground angrily. He had seen the excited looks that Sia had worn in his fight with the other brumby that meant she wouldn't have minded one bit if the other stallion won her. He snorted again. I thought you knew how I thought about you! He thought wrechedly. I love you! Why can't you love me back? I didn't intend to kill that stallion, and you don't understand! Any of it! You're only three years old. I'm six years old. Doesn't my love mean anything to you? He thought, turning away from Sia. He may have turned away, but his sensitive nose was still at work.

Still Tallerk stood, a silent statue, too miserable to even shake the flies off her dusty pelt. Flanks, hollow and sunken, took lonely breaths. Eyes gazed unseeing, or at least unwilling to see. She would remain this way until the band moved on for new pastures, forcing her to drag herself onward, but even then nothing much would change. Perhaps time would help the old mare to heal, but for now she was resigning herself to death.

Kaie looked up at the sky. It was getting dark, and omimous- looking clouds loomed over them, blocking out the stars. Trotting down the hillock, he went over to Sia. "Sia, I think it's going to rain, and I want to get you and her out of the weather. Can you get her in front of you? I know a cave very near here, I'll lead."
