After her encounter with Rezar the previous evening, Kessa was starting to calm down from the ordeal. A man's horse masquerading as a free stallion? Kessa had literally shied away from the fact. Men were dangerous, it was drummed into every filly and colt from the moment they were born. Rezar was a threat, albeit an increasingly interesting threat. That stubborn rebellious streak inside her demanded to know more. If he was indeed free from the men, then he'd be infamous soon enough, His escape, his stories and adventures! Kessa liked to be in the spotlight, and what better way to be in the herd of an escaped stallion's herd?!
But first, she had to combat the fear that gripped her whenever she thought of men. She had to get over it, and she thought the best way to do that was to expose herself to as many of man's things as possible but without getting caught.
As she made her way to the Cascade Hut, her heart beat loudly in her chest. The mix of adrenalin and fear was building, tugging her between instincts. When she came in range of the smell of smoke, she wanted to flee, but then the soft sounds of tame horses reached her, and she had to sneak closer, just to see them.
Tonight, while it was dark, she'd just watch them, she told herself. She neared the edge of the trees surrounding the hut, and she was trembling. Her golden coat was dark with sweat, and her ears were fixed back, pinned to the nape of her neck. Nostrils flaring, she breathed deeply, catching the scent of a stallion and a mare. There was another horse too, perhaps a colt. He smelt of male, but not as strong as the stallion she could detect.
There was light inside the hut, and smoke rising from the chimney column on top. The men were inside, but she had to catch a glimpse of the tame stallion! She was sure he'd be exciting. She moved around the edge of the tree-line, keeping just inside it so she could not be spotted from the hut. She could see the fences now, and beyond it some dark shapes stood about.
They were darkly coloured, but the young male stood out with his white patches. The mare was settled in a different paddock with the dark hulk of the stallion. Kessa nickered in excitement, forgetting in her haste that the men might hear. Staring into the darkness, she tried to make out the shape of the stallion, but it was difficult, and his dark pelt did not help matters. Kessa took a few steps out of the trees, stretching her neck forward until she was close to the fence. She nickered again, softly this time. She just wanted to look at the stallion, then she'd return to the highlands and safety.
A noise inside the hut stopped her cold. A human shout. Wheeling, Kessa crashed back into the bush, fleeing from the hut. It had been a bad idea to go there, she could have been caught!
