To answer her new friend's question, Loorea continued. "My parents had been taken to the outback, with the men riding them. After a few of these trips, when I was about two months old, they decided they wanted to be free and indepedent, and live their own lives. So one night, we escaped. The fence wasn't very high at all, since my parents were tame horses, so I could jump it. Then we lived happily in the outback, my father gaining mares all the time, but never forgetting me or my mother. Then I left, when I was about a year old, and that's when it happened....."

"Wow," Tamaska gasped. "I don't blame them, I would of escaped at the first chance I got too." He smiled, nose and ears twitching. He always hated the way the men rode around on the back of horses that carried them many miles. The cold bar that stuck between the teeth was torture to him and was glad he wasn't one of the domestic brumbys.

Loorea smiled in reply, and continued. "It was summer, and I was resting in one of the caves at the Bridle Bull. I didn't notice the smell of man and the sound of his horses until it was too late. They had seen me, and were waiting outside the cave. I decided to try and rush past them, but one rope descended on my neck. I tried to get free, and all of them roped my neck. So I was capured. They kept me in the field I had lived in as a foal. Most of the time, they kept these horrible metal things clamped around the bottom of my legs. The only time they came off was during the middle of the day, when the roped me to a tree in the middle of the field. After about five days, I met Daku. He told me he would help me, and together we formed a plan. On the seventh day of my capture, when it was late afternoon, the men came to put the hobbles-the metal things- on my legs. First they came toward me, with the hobbles in hand. But Daku sprang from behind the tree, and growled at the men. I pulled, and the rope broke. I had spent all my avaliable time chewing through it. Then I jumped the fence, and ran. After a while, Daku caught up with me, and we became inseperable."

Tamaska grinned. "That's a really nice story," He said, twitching his nose again. "Us animals are alot more clever that they think." He chuckled.
The brilliant sun burnt against his grey back. "Maybe we should find some shelter," He suggested, pointing towards a group of trees, wiping the sweat from his forehead at the same time.

Loorea shook her head to dislodge a fly that had settled there. "Yes, I think you're right," the young mare whinnied, and headed for the trees. "Race you!" She challenged her two friends. Daku got up, panting, and grinned at Tamaska. "Shall we?" he asked.

With a nod of his head, the kangaroo flicked his grey tail and leaped off after the white mare, kicking up dust behind him. A small breeze brushed against his face as he hopped as fast as he could - obviously no match for Loorea - towards the shelter of the trees.

Loorea was young and strong. But Tamaska stood a good chance against the white mare, for kangaroos could hop very fast. But she got to the trees first, skidding to a halt. Daku was behind Tamaska, owing to the fact that both his friends had longer legs than he.

The young kangaroo laughed as he pulled himself to a stop before flopping down on the floor, panting. "Second place isn't that bad," He thought to himself quietly, letting a small smile escape to his mouth. "I'm not the fittest of kangaroos," He said, prodding his belly with his long fingers. "But that was fun." The green leaves of the trees made a blanket that rested over their heads, providing a nice cool shadow that covered them in a mist of black. The only light came from beyond the egde of the trees. Futher on into the forest was only black.

Loorea collapsed on her side. "Indeed, it was fun," she agreed. She nibbled at some grass in front of her. Daku lay, all for limbs splayed, panting. "It's too hot to do this kind of thing," he grumbled good-naturedly.

Tamaska chuckled. "You have a point there," He said, flopping down onto the dry leaves of the forest floor. "But I do love the summer." He sighed, wriggling his little black nose again.
