Read on! For information on how breeding seasons, gestation and foals work at Kossy.
And that's that! If you have any questions, please contact a staff member.
For Critters (Not Brumbies)
PM a staff member if you have a non-brumby pair that wishes to breed. The breeding season and gestation varies for each critter. Read on for info on brumby breeding.
For Humans
Again, PM a staff member if a human pair are going to become pregnant. Obviously there is no breeding season, but a staff member will determine when the baby will be born. It is up to the player what gender the child will be.
For Horses
Each breeding season, each stallion starts a thread in this board and any mares that he owns who the players wish to become pregnant should post their mare's form in the stallion's thread. You can also opt to use genetics to determine what colour foals your brumbies can make. Staff will post the possible colours with the gender of your foal when gestation is over. Alternatively, you can make up your own foal colour (natural colours/patterns only).
Gestation and Birth:
The gestation period is four RL months, minus a week (the Kossy-time equivalent of 11 months, almost four full seasons!). This may seem an insanely long time, but in reality the wait between foals would be the same whenever the breeding season was. Mares should gradually begin to show their foals over the time they are pregnant, and when the foal is ready to be born, they will usually move away from the herd for a few days to give birth.
Newborns:
It is up to the parents' players who plays the newborn and what coat colour they will have. Each player MUST post a full character creation form for each foal that they are going to play. Make sure you pay attention to the age of the offspring, as a young animal will be more at risk and not as developed as an adult. Offspring should age as the year goes on, they cannot suddenly become three years old after one season has passed.
The Process
At the top of the main page on Kossy is a table that will tell you if the current season is a breeding season. The breeding season starts at the beginning of spring and ends at the end of summer.
- Stallions must be 2-years-old or more to breed, and can only do so with mares in their herd. Unless something sneaky goes on. Stallions can also breed at any time, but feral mares are only receptive in the breeding season.
- Mares must be 3-years-old or more to breed. Mares can breed at any time during the breeding season, unless they are pregnant from last season. Once the foal conceived last season has been born, the mare may breed again.
- Tame mares are actually variable in their breeding seasons, so they can be bred at any time, but generally in yearly cycles.
In the breeding season, the player of the stallion posts a new thread in this board, the "Current Breeding Season" board.
Players of mares then reply to these threads with their mare's stats. Both parents should use the form below:Name:
Once the form of the mare has been posted, she becomes pregnant and the gestation period begins. She cannot breed again that season, and will remain pregnant until the gestation period is up. There is no need to post a mare's stats if she is going to miscarry.
Gender:
Coat Colour:
Use Genes?: Yes/No
Genes: (Optional, see character list for your character's genes)
The gestation period is four RL months minus a week from the date (Aussie time) that the stats were posted.
Before the next breeding season comes around, the threads in the "Current Breeding Season" board will be moved to the "Pending Foals" board. When the gestation period for a mare is up, a staff member will post the gender of the foal, and the possible coat colours if "Use Genes" is selected. If you choose not to use genes, you may choose the colour of the foal (natural coat colours and patterns only).
Before the foal is born, the player of the stallion and the mare should discuss who will play the foal. If this cannot be decided rationally, a staff member will decide for you.
When the foal is born, the player must post a full character profile in the "Pending Profiles" board like any other new character to be accepted. You should mention in their profile who their parents are, and who's herd they are born into.
And that's that! If you have any questions, please contact a staff member.
