Name: Poorinda
Species: Brumby
Gender: Filly
Age: 2 yo.
Appearance: Poorinda is a small horse, lighter than most brumbies, but with the short back and strong hindquarters of her stockhorse grand-dam. Her sloping shoulder lends itself to a longer stride, with which Poorinda is able to cover quite a bit of ground.
The filly stands at a neat 15HH, and shows no signs of getting any taller. Her neck, while slightly thick and short, is well-shaped, and set high on her shoulders. Her head is finely-chiselled, with large nostrils and an oftentimes wild expression.
Poorinda is a pale cream colour, her silver mane and tail tinged with a darker shade. The only white markings the filly has, is a thin stripe down her face and some scars where she was once caught up in an old wire fence.
Personality: Poorinda is a fierce and spirited young mare. She does not fear any horse or man. Indeed, she regards stockmen as a minor irritation and cannot understand how their tame horses can tolerate them. However, man holds some curiosity for her, and more than once, the filly has gone up to the hut at Dead Horse Gap to see what the other brumbies are so worried about.
Presently, Poorinda spends much of her time playing roughly with a group of young horses that run in the lower Cascades. She is familiar with most of the country south of the Thredbo River, but has no interest in exploring any further. She will viciously retaliate if a stallion or colt becomes too pushy, and many of the two and three-year-old colts know enough to keep their distance.
History: Poorinda was out of the black mare Karween, mate of Jirrand. The filly was born in a patch of bush at the foot of Stockwhip Hill. She became separated from her dam during the bush fire, and was hung up in a fence in her panic to get away. Poorinda found herself on the other side of the Murray River and it was some time before the filly could muster the courage to swim back across.
However, although she returned to Yarraman’s Valley, there was no sign of her sire or the rest of his herd, and so the filly has been alone ever since, running instead with a mob of two and three-year-old horses.
