Balendin was here.In Yarraman's valley. The silver mare looked around at all the other horses and began to graze.Mmm,she thought, this grass is good. Since she had been a newborn foal, she had been told stories of men, horses, and the Silver Brumby. She remebered now that this was the place wher the once-mighty Yarraman had died, defeated by the Brolga. She snorted. Then Thowra, when he was older, had deafeated the Brolga! She rolled on her back, and gazed up at the sky. Then the shadow of another horse was cast over her.....

The other foals were so boring, to them mid-afternoon meant nap time, but not to Aroona. The small blue roan filly had taken to exploring while her brothers and sisters were asleep. She wanted nothing more than to be like her father and older brothers, they went off and had adventures while she was stuck at her mother’s side all day in the valley. It was a nice feeling to be away from her family, even if it was for only an hour or so.
Unfortunately there didn’t seem to be anything around to entertain Aroona and she was just about to sulk back to the herd when some movement caught her eye. There was a new horse rolling in the grass. With an excited whinny she made her way over to the stranger, she repressed the instinct that told her a stranger could be dangerous. The blue roan filly had been too young to fully remember the repercussions the last stranger had brought with him. “Hi I’m Aroona, what are you doing in my father’s valley?” she chimed as she stood over the new mare.
