INTRODUCTION
1. WHAT ARE GENES?
Genes are chunks of DNA, which governs how you look. They carry the information about certain parts of the body, for example, colour genes, height genes, metabolism genes, today. Colour genes, which is what we will focus on, carry all the information as to what colour a horse will be and what colour it's foals might be. Genes are what's called 'hereditary', which means you get them from your parents. That is why two chestnut horses will always have a chestnut foal, and why a person will look a bit like their Mum and Dad.
2 .WHY USE GENES ON KOSCIUSKO?
The short answer: Fun and Realism.
We use them here during the breeding season to tell us what colours are possible if two characters decide to have a foal. You know how if you breed, for example, two black horses you can still sometimes get a chestnut foal seemingly out of nowhere, but two chestnuts will never have a black? We use the genes to go into that sort of detail to tell you absolutely every colour combination your character can get with their partner, no matter how small the odds of that colour happening.
It's also completely optional. If you don't care what colour your characters would have in real life, you're free to make two black horses have a tobaino overo blue roan resessive flaxen for all we care. It's all in the name of fun.
If you do want to play things more realistically and have more unpredictability, or even maybe discover colour combinations you didn't know existed, that's what this is here for.
3. HOW DO I FIGURE OUT MY CHARACTERS GENES?
Keep reading . You can either just grab a code from the list below, or learn genes yourself futher down to make your own code.
Or, there's the easy version, where you just tell me your horses colour via PM and show me their picture, and I'll cough up a gene code for you that will give them the most possible foal colour options with no work involved on your part.

INSTANT CODES!1. CAN YOU TELL ME SOME COMMON COMBINATIONS TO GET ME STARTED?Sure. Here are some common colours and the most common genes that go with them. I do not pretend this list is all encompassing for every character, so if you want to make sure it's 100% right for your char, PM me with a picture of your character and what colour they're meant to be. If you have a picture but have no idea what colour it is, PM me as well. Not every colour is on here because some need to be taken on a case-by-case basis (eg: pinto genes). The genes are listed with the most flexible combination at the top, meaning, the one has the most potential foal colour options, and the most restricting code is at the bottom. The middle ones are in order from least to most restricting as much as possible, though with some genes it doesn't even matter. 1.
