The snow on the top of the Ramshead Range was untouhed by hoof or paw as a black mare picked her way along the gratnite tors. She was hoping to get down into the valleys to shelter but so far had seen no easy way to do that.
Thankfully, it was quite a clear day, so the mare had quite a good view of the ground below. She stopped thoughtfully to gaze across the mountains. A Kurrawong flapped past crowing loudly. The mare jumped at the sound and decided to carry on walking. Soon enough she had found what looked like a path that would lead her down into the valleys below.
'Perfect!' she thought, as she headed toward the slight drop. The Kurrawong flapped past her again.
"Go away you pesky bird!" she snorted at it. The bird flapped away. The mare stepped carefully down the slope, watching not to slip. She stuck out like a sore thumb with her jet black coat. But she wasn't proitised with that, man hadn't been in the mountains for at least a month now, and there wasn't any danger of running into any predators.
She slowed her pace as one of her hooves went deep into the snow and slid. She snorted in alarm. The sound echoed in the empty range. 'Great!' she thought to herself as the air started to fill with little white flakes. The mare carried on walking. She had gotton about halfway down when she noticed what looked like a small trail leading off into the mountain side.
'Please say that leads to someplace I can shelter' she wondered. The trail was narrow here but the snow wasn't very deep, even though it was falling around her. She wondered if she had reached the south Ramshead yet. She carried on down the path and suddenly she noticed a dark opening in the mountain ahead. It was a small cave. She wandered in and lay down. The snow wasn't that heavy at the moment, but she thought better of attempting to continue her walk back down the Ramshead, she knew that the snow would get thicker most probably. So, she just decided to sleep.

After a while of visiting the Brindle Bull, Althea had grown cold and tired. The paths were long down there, but then again, the Ramshead was steep and rocky. Steadily, she climbed up and up till she reached the top. The snow wasn't falling, and there was some grass under rocks she could eat. Quickly she snatched it down and her hunger died away. But she was still a bit tired and cold.
Althea looked for some shelter, she knew that right up the top there was nothing, but further along there was a thin track that lead to a cave. Hoping it wasn't taken, she galloped along the path as snow began to fall. There she saw the black mare asleep in the cave. Hoping that she hadn't disturbed her, she turned around and slowly walked back, snowflakes covering her chestnut coat and dark mane.

Koiji stirred not long after Althea had come to look at the cave. She got up, stretched and walked over to the mouth of then cave. It was Twilight now, and the snow seemed to have stopped. She was getting hungry, it had been a couple of day since she had last had a decent graze, so she decided to wander about in search of grass. She lowered her head to the ground and spotted some hoof prints that didn't look as if they had been there long. She sniffed them; it wasn't a scent she reconised, but what harm could it do to see where they lead?
There were a couple of chestnut hairs along with the prints, that must have got blown out of the winter coat of this horse, but again Koiji was clueless as to who this was. She wandered on into the night. Hoping that maybe she could find a friend.

Althea was unaware that her tracks were being fallowed. She came out of the crevice and cantered out ontop of the ramshead to study the land around her. Through the darkness the snowgums below swayed and wombats strayed from their holes. Some things came to life at night, while some didn't. She looked up at the moon, tonight it was almost full. "How beautiful," she thought.

It was growing cold again as Koiji galloped along following the footprints. Thankfully, the snow hadn't started to fall again, so the hoof prints were still visable for the black mare to follow. She stopped after she had traveled a good distance, and looked about her surroundings. The Ramshead was truly magical at night. The moonlight reflected strongly off the leaf-bare trees, and the small bushes that grew everynow and then up the mountain were a silvery-blue colour. Koiji lifed her head and looked at the moon. It was reaching the point where it was almost full.
"Oh, where did you go, Ryu?" she asked the moon. Her eyes filled with sadness. It took her a while to figure out that the air was filling slowly again with snow.
She shook herself and started to canter the way the prints went.

Althea heard the sound of hoofbeats coming towards her. She pricked her ears up and kept her senses alert, and picked up a scent. It was the mare that had been in the cave, she thought, leaping down from a rock and trotting towards the sound. "Hello, any soul around?" she asked the night, waiting for an answer anciously. The snow began to fall again, and it got harder and harder.

The sky was fast filling with snow as Koiji galloped along. Now she was getting desperate for shelter, and she didn't know the country about her well enough to be able to pick her way back to the cave. She knew that the snow couldn't harm her, but she was very cold. A sound echoed through the air. Koiji stopped to listen. It sounded like trotting foot-falls. The a voice called out to her.
"Hello, any soul around?"
Koiji pricked her ears and whinnied her responce clearly. "Hello? Do you know a place a cold brumby could shelter?"
She waited for a responce. She knew that she ahd heard a voice, and hoped that they would reply.

"I'm sorry I disturbed your sleep, my curious is very selfish," she laughed at herself. "I;m afraid not, the cave has been lost in the snowfall, but we could search the mountain for a cut out of the rocks?" she added, turning around to see the jet black mare. Like the black, Althea's light brown coat stood out, and so did her chocolate-brown mane,tail and splotch. "My name is Althea,"
