"C-carefull...careful now." The chestnut mare murmured into her colt's small ears. She placed her hooves carefully over the mud, testing it before putting all her weight down. She had heard horses who got stuck in the mud, and that was the last thing she wanted for herself or for her young colt, Coorain. Sia glanced wearily over at him, to make sure that he was following her instructions exactly. Coorain's ears flickered and he looked up from the ground to see his dam staring at her. He cocked his head to the side and frowned at her.
Sia shook her head, and turned away. She kept her distance from the center of the Big Boggy, as that was where the mud was much softer and would easily swallow anyone whole. Coorain, who was much lighter than his dam, pricked his ears and feeling the young energy that surged through his veins, darted forward at a quick trot. Ignoring his dams snort of terror. His short tail flicked cheekily from side to side. He flicked his head over his shoulder to stare at Sia with wide eyes, she was now trotting over the mud, and was quickerly catching up! Coorain squealed, kicking up his pale heels before bolting forward over the hard mud. He took heed to what his dam had said, and kept from the center of the bog.
Sia whinnied, her heart racing ahead, her eyes bulging in terror as she watched her colt run away from her. She picked up the pace, but was careful not go any faster than a trot. "Coorain! Come back!" She screeched, begging him to come back to her.

Kaie materialized in front of his son, eyeing him disapprovingly. The blood bay whinnied reprovingly, "Coorain, you should never run away from your mother. This world is a dangerous place, and you might get hurt or killed if you leave her side, at least until you’re a yearling.”

Coorain snorted, skidding to a stop infront of a great bay stallion. His ears flickered and he glared in annoyance at him, this horse just ruined all his fun! He rolled his eyes and looked away.
Sia soon caught up with her son, a sigh escaping her lips. "You silly little colt!" She snapped, giving him a sharp nip on the rump. She glanced up and stared at Kaie, a soft smile peeling across her lips. "Thanks, it would have taken me a bit longer to catch up with him if you hadn't shown up." She moved around Coorain and quickerly stretched out her muzzle to nuzzle his neck affectionately. Coorain grunted, moving in closer to Sia, his eyes wide as he watched the way his mother reacted to the presence of the stallion.

With his mares safely in the care of his friend and ally, Nandalie, the King of the High Country was free to wander his domain. He did hate to be away from his large family for too long but still, every now and then, the urge to roam was too great to ignore. Tingara relished the open air and the quiet being alone brought. He was completely blissful, pacing along the ridge he was on. A familiar smell reached his nostrils; he was close to the Big Boggy, the place in which he had met Crayola so many years ago.
It had been a long time since he’d traversed the mysterious bog so, while he had the chance to, the black King loped off in its direction. With his head held high with pride and curiosity Tingara lightly picked his way through the dangerous marshes. The great stallion never lost his footing as he trotted over the slippery ground. Really there was not much to behold about the Big Boggy and he was just about to turn for home when a mare’s voice reached his ears. She sounded distressed and so of course it was his duty to check it out.
He wandered through the light mist that had built up, stopping only to listen out for her. The call had sounded quite close before and again he heard her, this time not far ahead. The King whinnied to the mare, announcing his presence to her and any other horses that might have been around also. At last she came into view and Tingara was pleasantly surprised that she was rather pretty, a deep shade of chestnut. A not so pleasant surprise was that there was another stallion talking to her. ”Excuse me, I heard a mare cry out, are you in need of help?” he nodded his head politely before turning to the stallion, ”Is this mare in your company, does she run with you?”

Kaie, in reply to his mate's gesture of affection, nibbled her ears gently and fondly. "You're welcome. It really wouldn't do for him to get hurt or lost---" He turned around at the sound of another brumby. It was a great, black stallion, and Kaie recognised him at once from the gossip and tales that the gang-gangs and other brumbies brought with them. This was the King of the High Country, Tingara. He saw the black eying Sia admiringly, and he barely repressed a snort of rage. Kaie was not a possessive stallion; he just did not think it was polite to eye a mare in that fashion when it was clear she had a foal with her.
Taking a step forward, the big, handsome bay listened to the other stallion, first talking to his mate, then him. ”Excuse me, I heard a mare cry out, are you in need of help?” nodding his head, the black King turned to Kaie, ”Is this mare in your company, does she run with you?” Kaie nodded his head in reply. "Yes, O King, she does," he neighed.

She snorted, shaking her head gently from side to side. "Indeed." She said in response to Kaie before he was cut off. She turned her attention to a handsome black stallion who was heading their way. She glanced wearily at Kaie, then back at the stallion. For a moment, she was unsure as to whether he was the king or not, but after Kaie informed him, Sia was sure it was.
Nodding politely at the great black, she spoke, "I was, until Kaie showed up." She motioned towards the bay stallion, "Coorain decided it would be funny if he ran ahead of me." She snorted her annoyance and disapproval at the colt that stood quivering by her side, but the little colt paid very little, to no attention to his mother. He stared wide eyed up at the huge black, glancing wearily from the bay back to the black.

Amused, Tingara snorted at the bay stallion. His answer had been short, to the point and with undercurrents of protectiveness. The black disregarded the strange stallion once he’d answered but watched him for any signs of aggression nonetheless. The beautiful bay mare and her colt were far more interesting to the King. Her voice was soft and sweet, full of love for her foal even if it was masked by annoyance. It reminded Tingara of the dear appaloosa mare he had left in Nandalie’s care and it made him smile at her. ”Foals have a habit of doing that, if I had not been careful one of my daughters would have followed me all the way here,” the black stallion chuckled.
Although he was being civil, Tingara desired the mare and disproved of her stallion. He turned back to the bay stallion, again regarding him with a mix of curiosity and disproval. ”Do you care for this mare? If you do why did you let her wander alone through the Boggy, a place where dingos frequently roam, dingos who would make a meal of this foal. This place is a place of treacherous pools of mud and mist, not a place for a careless stallion to lose such a beautiful mare,” he said irately, ears pinned to his neck.

Kaie's ears twiched at Tingara's reply. It was clear that he desired to have Sia, through his words and looks. The blood bay knew that Sia was bound to catch the eyes of stallions, but he cursed the bad fortune that the King had to be one of them. He knew that if he fought Tingara and won, that he himself would be King. But he had not interest in that, and knw that it was almost impossible. "Of course I care for her," he retorted quietly. "I have not known many dingos who would make a meal of a horse, even a foal, but of course it is possible. But I am not careless, not as careless as you undoubtedly think me. Besides, a mare should be sometimes allowed to decide where her herd- or family- goes, at least sometimes? Or would you have all the stallions in the land not letting their herds do anything that they wanted to do? Sia is not careless, and I would have gone agaist us coming here if she was, and our son has come to no harm. Pardon me saying, O King, but you do not have the right to tell us what we should do."

Sia giggled along with the black. She did not feel nervous, nor was she really that worried. She moved closer to Coorain and slung her neck over his. She sighed, holding her head there for a moment, before she felt her little chestnut colt wriggle under her. She shifted her weight and took a step back. Her ears flickered as she caught the king's deep, masculine voice once more, this time it was directed at Kaie. The furosity was clear in his voice as he addressed the bay stallion. She stared down at her hooves, while Coorain stared willingly up at the black stallion and the bay. He was still wondering who these two horses were, obviously not understanding entirely what the black said to the bay.
Kaie's retort surprised Sia and she glanced up at him. She did not understand entirely of what was wrong; she had not seen the looks the black was giving her, and she had never been fought over by a stallion, so did not understand..or know when another stallion desired her. She, of course, had seen stallions fighting over mares...but they had never been fighting over her. Now, if she was in her right frame of mind, she would probably had nipped Kaie and told him to shut up and not be so disrespectful, but at the moment..for once in a long time..she was silent. She beheld the black, half of her desired to run with him and his giant herd..another ripped at her to stay with Kaie. She was in the middle of a tug o' war and she didn't even know it.

The bay stallion’s talk was irritating at best. To Tingara it sounded as though the stranger was trying to make him sound as though he, the king, did not know what he was talking about. ”Dingoes have taken foals, and in packs, have also taken mares many times before. You are just lucky none have threatened the lovely mare in whose company you somehow found yourself,” he snorted irritably, pawing the ground impatiently.
”Of course I let my mares chose where the herd goes. I highly doubt a mare, as wise and loving as yours would have come here unless she had lost you,” Tingara said quietly before nickering gently to the chestnut mare and her foal, subconsciously willing them to come away with him. ”What is your name O beautiful one?” he asked softly, holding his nose out to her. He knew it was a blatant, flirtatious move that would surely anger her stallion and that was what he wanted. If he could not woo the mare away then he would surely fight for her and he had complete confidence in his abilities.
