A sooty palomino mare struggled up the mountain, her sides heaving and sweat running down from her back. A little grulla filly was bouncing next to her. It never seemed to run out of energy. Coorah gave it a nip, and Ally immediately calmed down for a few steps, then ran on ahead. The mare blew hard through her nostrils, and bounded a few more leaps up the mountain, past the snow gums and sweet grass. She and another mare were running from a stallion that had began to fight her new stallion, as loyal herd members should. She was not attracted to more handsome critters, but was definitely loyal. The mare finally made it over one last bank of dirt and snow, then lay down on her side, exhausted, and waited for her friend Irwaddy to follow.

Nandalie lifted his bruised head to the sky and smelled. He had definately picked up Coorah's scent, and it wasn;t faint. She was close to him, yet so far away. The red roan wanted to call for her, but then he'd give away his position to any nearby stallions, and he'd be easy to pick off.
He continued to climb the steep, rocky mountain in a despirate struggle, his wounds still open from his moving. His back had a bunch of cuts, and even though they weren't too deep, they were flooding blood onto his already-red coat. At last, he reached the top and whinnied lowly to Coorah. "At last, I've found you," he muttered before collapsing again onto the soft grass. He had collapsed like this when Coorain had left their fight. But his urge for safety had made him move, and luckily he'd caught Coorah's trail.
He tried not to look at Ally, fearing that his bloody appearence might scare the filly.

Irawaddy followed Coorah and her foal up the steep side of the mountain. It was a hot afternoon and the large bay mare had to urge her foal up the final few steps. Finally they reached the top and began to graze fitfully, wondering about the outcome of their stallion's fight. Irawaddy kept raising her head nervously, hoping Nandalie would pull through. She knew she and Coorah had made the right decision by leaving, but she wished she had a better idea of how the fight was going.

Coorah gave a weary snort at her stallion's appearance, and climbed back to her hooves. They had to find Irwaddy. Ally wasn't afraid at all, but for some reason was fascinated with the blood coming from his many wounds. She thought the colour looked interesting. The sooty palomino sniffed at him, decided he wasn't too injured, and gave a loud call for her friend mare and her foal.

Nandalie fought his pain to get up on his knees. He laughed at Ally, the stallion remembered himself as a foal. He hadn't been brave like her, he had been rather shy and untrusting. But now things were different. Thinking made him feel better and less sore.
The blood flow was slowing down. By now the sun was setting, and Nandalie managed to get up, He felt a tad better, but his wounds were still fully open. Tonight he'd sleep well.

Because Omaroo had been lagging quite a bit behind the other mare and foal (mainly because she was more interested in knowing what was going on in the clearing than leaving) Irawaddy and Omaroo had stopped alone to graze. She could hear Coorah and Ally upahead, then an exhausted Nandalie. With a grateful sigh she whickered gently to them to let them know her location, then nudged Omaroo and began to make her way towards them.

Ally's ears pricked up at the faint scent of the other foal, who she arrogantly thought of as her best friend, and began to canter down the steep slope. Coorah stopped the rash, headlong plunge down the hill by swinging her head in front of the grulla filly, and she whinnied again, calling for the other mare. The foal snorted grumpily and swung her hindquarters to face her mother. She was not impressed.

Irawaddy heard Coorah calling for her, and whinnied back in reply "We are fine, we're coming!" she called gently, grateful to have such a good friend with her in her herd. She and Omaroo crested one last ridge and came upon the other mare and filly, and the battle weary Nandalie. She looked in horror at Nandalie's blood stained coat, and after touching her nose to Coorah's, and leaving Omaroo already playing with Ally, she rushed over to her stallion's side and touched his nose, whickering to him "Are you alright?" she asked anxiously, tenderly touching one of the bite wounds on his neck to gage it's deepness.

Coorah whinnied gratefully to her friend, happy that the mare was alive and free, and allowed herself to rest. She had only just discovered that her whole body had been tense, and her mind worrying about the predicament of herd members left unattended while their stallion was weak from battle injuries. The sooty palomino pulled up clods of grass and crunched them up thoroughly before swallowing them, something even foals had to do lately. The ground was getting harder. Ally squealed with delight as her friend foal appeared, and ran over to nip Omaroo as an invitation to play. She wanted to have fun! Adults don't matter, once they've given milk and start to talk.
