”Humans aren’t in the habit of painting a horses tail,” he replied with an amused snort before once again trying to wedge himself between and the dun and the filly. Other horses said the darnest things about people sometimes. Sola and Baramay seemed to have forgotten about him, but he didn’t overly mind. Young love and all that.

Baramay snorted at the thought of humans but almost instantly forgot they'd been mentioned. "I think Rezar's right, humans wouldn't paint his tail, that's just silly," she said loftily, she was too busy staring at Sola to care, but the dun was making her a bit wary. Baramay stood up next to Sola and lazily rested her head on his back. She had no idea that Jerome might want her as his own.

"I know that, I am not an idiot." Jerome grunted and nipped at Rezar in irritation.
"I would mean that they made him that way. You should know of stories where men choose mares for stallions in order to steal the foal from them. Maybe he is one of them, if that is the case. They will want to steal that foal back. He is just a danger staying here."
Jerome scoffed again as if pointing out the painfully obvious and tossed his head and trotted a couple of feet away from Baramay and Sola, if the mare was an idiot then he did not want her.

"I'm sorry I didn't mean it like that," Baramay said quietly, she wished she'd just stayed in the trees, at least there she wouldn't have embarrassed herself. She perked back up at what Jerome had said, "Sola is this true? Do humans really take foals aways as well as hurt us?" She wondered whether Sola was taken away from his dam.

Sola sighed; everyone seemed so interested in men, to him that were just kind of blase. "They take foals away. They did it to me and my herd when I was young." He explained, "but they feed you and keep you warm in return for the work we do. And the food is really good." Ah, Sola sometimes longed for the bran mash he used to eat. But something Rezar had said caught Sola's attention. "Rezar, you used to be a man's horse too?"

Huh, that was an interesting coincidence. Not only did they have the same tail but they had a similar back-story too. There was no point lying, so Rezar inclined his head a little as way of acquiesce. ”Yes I was. Same situation as you actually,” he said, giving Sola a curious look. ”Most horse’s fear of humans tends to be a bit irrational. As long as you get a good person then life, in some ways, is more comfortable than being wild. There’s good and bad to both.” he explained, mostly for Jerome’s benefit. It irked him when horses treated men like devil incarnates, especially since his old carer was as good-natured as they came.

Jerome would not understand what he was hearing. Humans? not that bad? It almost sound like these two fated idiots missed their enslaved life to a human. He felt repulsed by the whole matter and back away from them as if they were a bad smell.
"If you miss your 'better' life with the humans, then why do you not return to them." Jerome turned and trotted off to leave, the smitten mare and her men's horses were a lost cause.

Sola watched Jerome leave, feeling a sense of loss. No matter, he hoped he had found a friend in Rezar too. Then there was the small matter of Baramay. Sola had no confidence in himself when it came to wooing mares, but he was going to give it a go where the pretty chestnut was concerned.
"Um, Baramay." Ah, nice strong start there Sola. He mentally slapped himself. "If you have nowhere to graze and stay warm tonight, can I ask that we graze together? I could do with the friendly company." He knew he sounded like a wimp, but what the heck. He turned to Rezar. "Perhaps Rezar and his mare could join us?"

"I would love to come and graze with you," Baramay answered Sola, beaming, "I could use the company too." She looked to Rezar, "Are you and your mare going to come too?" Baramay began to gentley nibble at Sola's mane, she'd forgotten all about Jerome. Baramay began to get excited, she'd gone from being an unusual loner to having a new friend and possibly a stallion!

”Well, we have nowhere else to be,” Rezar responded cheerfully, keeping an eye on Jerome as he made his exit. The question was if Corowa was going to come out and join them or not. Considering her response to Kessa, he was a bit worried. With any luck, once she had a foal she would toughen up a bit. His mother had been like that, meek and mild mannered but as dangerous as any stallion when she had a foal at foot.
Sola and his mare where quite cute to watch, both so excited to have found someone else. It seemed cruel to consider trying to separate one from the other at this stage, they looked so happy. Dimly he wondered if he and Corowa had looked the same way that night in the storm.
"The grass is better further down. The cold ruins the grass this high up," Rezar explained with a toss of head to dislodge a few flies which had decided they liked his nose. "You'll need to go south anyway with the winter that's comming." Of course, this was based on what his mare had told him, but they didn't need to know that. It was better that he just sounded experienced and smart.
