A shape lay at the edge of the lake. It looked almost like a dead tree, apart from the fact it was breathing! Dilali breathed out slowly. Everything felt so good as she lay on the side of Lake Cootapatamba. Her lower half was almost completely submerged in water. The sun, retiring after an extremely hot day, beat gently down on her creamy grey hide. She was hot and exhausted from a day of searching for a mate. None of the stallions she'd found suited her.
Should she stop looking? Would her soul mate come to her?

Hooves crunched on the loose scree of the lake's rocky beach. A creamy female was making her way to the water, eyeing the other mare carefully. Flicking her ears, she offered a friendly nicker as she approached. Flaxen tail swatting away a pesky fly, she dropped her head to the water and began to drink deeply from the cool mountain lake.
She sighed heavily when she was done and walked over to the other mare. "I think you've got the right idea there. This weather is far too hot!" She smiled, snuffling at the ground in search of any sweet tussocks of grass that might have grown between the rocks and sand of the lake's edge. "I'm Kessa." She said, flicking her ears forward attentively. "You?"

Dilali heard the mare's question and opened her eyes. Dilali gazed intently up at the creamy mare standing over her. "Hello there! My name is Dilali," she replied to Kessa. Dilali pulled herself out of the water and greeted her new friend.

Kessa whinnied. "Nice to meet you." The mare bobbed her head in greeting. "Have you seen any men this season? I've been lucky enough to avoid them for now. I've only heard the gang-gangs gossip. Seen hide nor tail of the beasts themselves."

"Mmm... thank Thowra's ghost that no men seem to be around right now," Dilali said loftily. She smiled at Kessa and said, "I'm a little hungry, should we find some grass and settle down for the night?"

Kessa smiled. "Sure, there's a little hollow just up here that I like. Its got some good grazing." She gestured with her nose and trotted a few steps. "Follow me." She grinned and loped along the bank. She slowed a little as she came to a hill leading up from the lake. Climbing it with sturdy footsteps, she disappeared into a patch of trees. There was a small clearing just inside the copse, and she dropped her head to graze.

Dilali half-reared playfully and followed Kessa up the hill and through the trees to the shady copse. She dropped her head and began to graze lazily on the sweet grass. She looked over at Kessa and smiled to herself. Normally when she met a stranger she was shy and didn't open up until she'd gotten to know them better. With Kessa it was different, Dilali had warmed up to her instantly. In her heart Dilali felt as if her and Kessa would be friends for a long time to come.

After grazing for a while, Kessa lifted her head. "Where's your stallion? Its odd to find a single mare at this time of the year." She flicked her ears as the evening chorus of birds started up. Kessa was a little too rebellious to settle with a herd, and she'd yet to find a stallion that could hold her attention for long. Her mother would disapprove, but she was still young, she had time to enjoy herself before she was confined to a herd.

"I was looking for a stallion, but I couldn't find one that I liked. The ones I found weren't interested in me anyway," Dilali sighed. she wasn't sad she was just so tired of searching. Awhile back Dilali hadn't cared about running with a stallion but now instinct was telling her to find one. "Why don't you run with a stallion?" Dilali asked curiously, her blue eye gazed patiently at Kessa.

After travelling some time, Aleo had arrived at a small bushy area with fresh, sweet grass that he had visited on occasion when he had tired of his father's ranting. He was shocked to find that two other horses were in the space, so he remained silent in the snowgums, watching them quietly with his dark eyes. He wasn't sure if they knew he was there, but he could hear them chatting and assumed that they didn't. He prayed that the noisy lowries overhead wouldn't give him away.
