A buckskin stallion slowly made his way up the steed rocky slopes of Mount Kosciusko, not faltering or resting as he led the way to safety. A beautiful mare was with him, and he had heard of a great drive of the wild horses, forcing them into pens and taking away their freedom forever. Nowego didn't want that to happen to him, or to anyone he knew of, so he was traveling to the highest point of his home, in hope of being ignored in the men's searches for wild horses. The mare he had met before was still with him, and he was content that they were not going to be disturbed by the drive. It was a pity that other horses would be caught, but he couldn't save everyone. He realized that his climb would be over soon, as there was a suitable level area of grass in front of them, only a few meters ahead. With one last push, the buckskin managed to climb onto the sweet grass and wait for his friend to arrive.

Yaruka trotted nervously after Nowego, chesnut coat darkened with sweat. She flicked her ears nervously back and forth, listening for any hint of what Nowego and the birds had called "men." Of such creatures she had never heard before, but she didn't like the warning in the call of the gang-gangs nor the troubled look in Nowego's eyes when he had heard the news. She followed him closely, her full and very long flaxen mane in disarray as she hurried up the slope. Being naturally nervous the thought of the men disturbing the new found peace she had found with Nowego disturbed her, making her somewhat irrational in her fear. She could remember enough though, to keep quiet and to attempt to step only on the grass or rocks in order to leave no tracks. Up ahead the buckskin stallion began to slow and she lengthened her stride to walk abreast him. "Do you think we are safe here, then?" she asked her friend quietly.

The stallion now felt content, as he had been before the Gang-Gangs had spread the news of Men. He and Yaruka were safe, as men preferred to stay away from the snow and icy clopes, lest their horses break their legs or become lost. Those strange animals worried more about catching brumbies than their own horse's health, usually, but even a Man would stop at the bottom of a slope made from ice. He grabbed a lump of grass from the ground as he walked, and turned his head to watch behind them. While chewing, Yaruka asked him a question, and he hurried to finish so he could answer. "We should be. Men do not venture here," Nowego answered shortly, a bit tense in his answer.

The shortness in his tone bothered her, for Yaruka was a very sensitive mare. Moving her feet uneasily she dropped her head and snatch a bite of grass, quickly raising it again. She could not relax. Now not only the fear of the men weighed on her but Nowego's attitude too. Surely he was just stressed, she tried to reason with herself but it was no good. Fretfully she moved around, flicking her tail though there were no flies to speak of. Anxiously she watched Nowego, dark eyes alight with concern.

After a few more minutes of silent grazing, Nowego glanced up to see why Yaruka wasn't speaking to him. She was hanging back, as if she was nervous of... him? He raised his head, and strode over to her, nickering gently. He hadn't meant to frighten her, but perhaps it hadn't been wise to speak to her as if she was a small child. "Do not fear. We are safe here, and all we have to watch out for is food and water shortages. And look," he added, gesturing towards the clearing. "There is plenty for both of us."

She sighed in relief as he approached gently, nickering a reassurance. Blowing out through her nostrils she lowered her head to graze beside the buckskin, more relaxed than she had been. Her ears still flickered to catch any hint of a threat but she was no longer breathing heavily. As the sun shone down from the sky it caught in her coat, reminding everyone within eye sight of why she had been named for the light. The sun's rays danced playfully on her copper coat, which glistened with the sleekness of spring. She grazed beside Nowego, teeth cropping at the grass rythmetically, listening to the birds call in the bush. All seemed quiet. For now.

Suddenly, as though from a horrible dream the pounding of thousands of hooves met her ears. Flinging up her delicate head she gazed, nostrils flared, out towards the drop of the ledge. Trembling she walked over to it and peered below. What she saw terrified her, unable to move from pure terror she called weakly to Nowego "Come, have a look." Below her dainty hooves rushed many horses, more in one place than she had ever seen in her three and a half years of life. Behind them galloped other horses, but these carried strange creatures on their backs and Yaruka shook with fear from the strangeness of it all.
